Appalachian State is a public university. It was founded in 1899, became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929, and in 1967 the name was changed to Appalachian State University. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Fine and Applied Arts, and the School of Music. Its campuses totaling 1,300 acres are located in Boone, 95 miles from Winston-Salem.
