The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a multi-campus, public university located in the state’s largest metropolitan hubs with three distinct campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston. As an active and engaged member of our surrounding communities, USM prepares students to play vital roles in the diverse economic, civic, social, and cultural fabric of Maine and beyond. Each of USM's three distinct, environmentally friendly campuses allow you to experience the very best that Maine has to offer, from classic New England towns to bustling cities, as well as the extensive resources of the university. USM offers a robust selection of on-campus and online courses and degree programs in liberal arts; STEM disciplines including a new cyber security lab; business; and visual and performing arts; as well as an exceptional Honors Program. Our 22 nationally recognized Division III athletics programs offer student-athletes the opportunity to compete at conference, regional, and national levels. Our teams win their regional championships, including baseball, women's basketball, and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track teams, and our student-athletes regularly earn All-American and Academic All-American honors. The university mascot is Champ, the Husky. USM’s faculty members include Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellows, advisors to state and local government, and acclaimed authors all dedicated to putting classroom theory into real-world practice by involving students in community issues. Their commitment to excellence and innovation is one way in which USM fulfills its mission of learning, engaging, and giving back to the communities it serves, often providing a strong foundation to community members looking to solve complex challenges regionally, nationally, and even globally. USM students bring curiosity, a strong work ethic, intelligence, and a desire to succeed. This close-knit collaboration of talent has created and supported an in-depth network of alumni and community partners across Maine and beyond. A USM education emphasizes connections for active learning through internships, service learning, and volunteership. Internships help students transition from their college experience to using their professional skills in a work environment. Students also benefit by gaining experience in chosen career paths and exploring different career choices. These experiences have become a valuable part of many graduates' resumes: In the academic year of 2018-19, approximately 1,483 academic for-credit internship experiences were completed by 739 students, completing 85,390 hours with over 200 employers and non-profit organizations. Because of the University of Southern Maine’s prime locations, students have access to a wide range of opportunities with state and local government, triple-A sports teams, leading teaching hospitals, and a variety of music and performing arts venues—opportunities not readily available in larger or more populous states. USM is now SAT or ACT test optional! Undergraduate degree applicants* are no longer required to submit SAT or ACT test scores to be considered for admission. We are also offering Early Action for students interested in being guaranteed an admission decision earlier in the process. Students who apply by November 15 — and submit all supporting materials by December 1 — will be guaranteed an admission decision by January 15. *Due to the competitive nature of our nursing program, undergraduate applicants to nursing must submit their SAT or ACT scores when applying. We no longer require an application fee for undergraduate or graduate admission. This includes in-state, out-of-state, and international applicants as well as reapplication or reactivation. Over 40% of USM students are adults. We understand the limited time you have available and recognize that the process of transferring credits can seem overwhelming and complicated. We are prepared to help you every step of the way. Our Admissions Officers can provide you with unofficial transfer credit evaluations to give you an idea of which credits will transfer. Official credit evaluations are completed and sent to admitted students several weeks after admission. Contact a Transfer Counselor at (207) 780-5670 or admitusm@maine.edu or visit usm.maine.edu/transfer. The University of Southern Maine Admissions team welcomes you to learn more about our university by visiting us on campus or via our virtual tour. We offer daily tours where you can see our campuses and experience all that USM has to offer. Schedule a visit today at usm.maine.edu/tour or visit virtually at usm.maine.edu/#virtualtour
