U of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a public, comprehensive institution. Founded as a state Normal school in 1885, it gained university status in 1956. Programs are offered through The School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Peck School of the Arts, Lubar School of Business, School of Education, College of Engineering and Applied Science, College of Health Sciences, School of Information Studies, College of Letters and Science, College of Nursing and the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. Its 104-acre main campus is located in a beautiful residential setting blocks from the shores of Lake Michigan and two miles from downtown Milwaukee.
