Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, a public, four-year institution, is one of 14 members of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Founded in 1839 as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute, the university currently enrolls nearly 8,000 undergraduate students in the Colleges of Professional Studies, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology and more than 800 graduate students in upper-level programs, including a doctoral program in clinical audiology. Ninety percent of the university's students are Pennsylvania residents and 7 percent hail from neighboring New Jersey. The top majors in fall 2007, in order, were biology and allied health sciences, early childhood and elementary education, management, secondary education, exceptionality programs and sociology, social welfare and criminal justice.
