Syracuse University, founded in 1870, is a private institution offering nearly 200 undergraduate programs in liberal arts; architecture; education; engineering and computer science; human ecology (including child and family studies, health and wellness, hospitality management, marriage and family therapy, nutrition sciences and dietetics, and sport management and social work); information management and technology; public communications; and visual and performing arts, (including art, music, drama, transmedia studies, and communication and rhetorical studies). SU offers the best of two learning environments. As a major research university, it is large enough to offer a wide variety of academic and extracurricular activities, and yet its nine undergraduate colleges provide smaller, more intimate settings in which students have opportunities to build lasting relationships with mentoring faculty members.
