Dear Student: The most important benefit of participating in this voluntary survey and research
project is the information you and your family will receive from colleges and universities. In some
cases, you and your family may also receive information about educational products & services such
as student loans and financial aid, college admissions and tutorial services, extra-curricular
enrichment and recognition programs, career, employment and military opportunities, and camps from
non-profit organizations, companies offering educational products & services, and government agencies.
NRCCUA does not share your information with commercial marketers offering to sell you
non-education-related products and services.
NRCCUA protects the privacy of students’ email addresses. We require all messages sent to the student from
our database, whether on behalf of NRCCUA or its members and approved organizations, meet the established
guidelines of permission-based email messaging. We do not distribute this data without provisions that allow the
student to opt out. A student may choose to opt out of NRCCUA, or opt out of hearing from a member or approved
organization, or both, at any time. The student may send email to research@nrccua.org
at any time indicating their desire to be removed from future mailings.
Commitment to Student Privacy
For over 35 years, the National Research Center for College & University Admissions has built educational bridges between
college-bound high school students and colleges and universities. Our mission is to create a brighter future for America’s
youth, with integrity through a unique process that captures and shares their educational and career aspirations…one dream at a time.
NRCCUA is a non-profit organization devoted to helping students receive the information needed to assist them in selecting a
college education or career path that is tailored to their interests. Through NRCCUA’s Post-Secondary Planning Survey®, nearly
5.5 million current high school students have an opportunity to identify their college and career preferences. This information is then
shared with 1,900 colleges and universities. In addition, students benefit from information about financial aid and other educational
organizations. Currently, 45,000 educators at 20,000 high schools have administered the survey to their students.
Privacy Protection
As a holder of student information, we recognize our responsibility to protect student privacy. We have worked to promote adoption
of standards within the educational community, and to inform the public about privacy issues. Working with our advisory council of
education leaders, NRCCUA developed principles (see below) to protect student privacy that guide NRCCUA’s data collection and
dissemination efforts. These principles are designed to assist NRCCUA in determining appropriate uses of information collected from
students for educational purposes consistent with The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), and other applicable law.
In 2001, the Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission announced his agency’s interest in reviewing the privacy practices of organizations
that collect personal information in offline or paper procedures. In 2002, the FTC and a group of state Attorney’s General inquired into
NRCCUA’s student privacy practices, focusing on disclosure issues. These inquiries and the resulting review of NRCCUA’s practices led to
mutually agreeable disclosure guidelines for NRCCUA to follow. NRCCUA was very pleased with the outcome of this process and continues to
operate in compliance with both the FTC and AG agreements.
Principles for Educational Products and Services
The following principles, created with the assistance of our voluntary Advisory Council, are designed to provide guidance to NRCCUA in
determining appropriate uses of information collected from students for educational purposes consistent with The Elementary and Secondary
Education Act (ESEA), and other applicable law.
The primary mission of NRCCUA is to provide data from annual student surveys to colleges and universities in order to enable high school
students to learn about and prepare for post-secondary opportunities.
Other education-related non-profit and for-profit organizations may use the student information to provide information about:
- financial planning, student loans, and scholarships
- enrichment opportunities such as travel programs, camps, extra-curricular activities and conferences
- curriculum materials, books, Internet based educational programs, educational magazines and low-cost literary products
- academic assistance, remedial help, and preparation for college-entrance examinations
- recognition for high levels of performance
- participation in community service
- learning about civic responsibilities
- employment, career options and the military
NRCCUA also uses student data for research purposes to have a greater understanding of the nation’s high school and college-bound students.
