WOMEN'S STUDIES

WHAT IS WOMEN'S STUDIES?

Women's studies is an interdisciplinary major that looks at women's roles and lives in contemporary society from a feminist perspective. Through the study of history, literature, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and other disciplines, students gain an appreciation for the vast body of scholarship and art created by women as well as how ideas about gender continue to influence our lives as men and women today.

WHAT COURSES DO YOU NEED TO TAKE?

Because women's studies is an interdisciplinary field, you will take classes in a variety of different departments, learning to see the world from different perspectives. Women's studies majors often receive the opportunity to conduct independent research projects, work in community service agencies, or study abroad. Here are some classes you might be asked to take:

  • Anthropology of Gender
  • Feminist Theory
  • Gender, Race, and Ethnicity
  • Introduction to Women's Studies
  • Marriage and Family
  • Sociology of Gender
  • Women and Religion
  • Women in Politics
  • Women's Literature

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A DEGREE IN WOMEN'S STUDIES?

Women's studies provides a strong background in the liberal arts and sciences, an educational orientation emphasizing research and writing skills, the ability to speak clearly before a group, problem-solving skills, and the ability to make intellectual connections between different subjects. These are skills that easily translate to jobs in journalism, marketing, education, politics, or social services. Many women's studies majors continue their educations and become college professors, lawyers, psychologists, doctors, and social workers.
