NUTRITION

WHAT IS NUTRITION?

Nutrition looks at how food is used in the body. But it doesn't stop there. Nutrition majors then learn how to apply that knowledge to help people manage chronic illnesses, reach weight goals, and achieve optimum health—through diet.

WHAT COURSES DO YOU NEED TO TAKE?

As a nutrition major, you will take your required liberal arts and sciences core classes along with a mix of targeted nutrition, science, and business courses. Because of the practical orientation of this major, you may receive opportunities to get hands-on experience through internships or cooperative education programs. Completing an internship not only gives you experience you can put on a résumé, it gives you a glimpse of your potential career. Here's a sample of some classes you might encounter in your nutrition major:

  • Bacteriology
  • Biochemistry
  • Chemistry
  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Dietetics
  • Economics
  • Food Chemistry
  • Human Anatomy
  • Human Physiology
  • Mathematics
  • Microbiology

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A DEGREE IN NUTRITION?

Working one-on-one with clients or in groups, nutritionists educate people about how to manage weight control issues as well as chronic health problems such as high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Nutritionists also go to work for major food manufacturers, wellness centers, and sports teams. You could become a registered dietician, chef, or food scientist. And with additional education, you could go on to be a professor, a public health nutritionist, or research dietician.
