Deferred Admission - a category of admission used in conjunction with early (action, decision, notification, or acceptance) plans to indicate that a student has not been admitted early, but will remain in the applicant pool for reconsideration during the review of applications in the regular admission deadline pool
Deferred Enrollment - a category of admission available at some institutions for fully accepted students who wish—for a justifiable reason—to take a semester or a year off before enrolling in college
Demonstrated Interest - a student’s expression of his or her desire to attend a particular college, evidenced by campus visits, contact with admissions officers, and other forms of behavior that attract the attention of admissions personnel (Not all colleges use this as a factor in accepting students for admission. However, in 2004, the National Association for College Admission Counseling reported that more that 50% of their sample of 595 colleges included demonstrated interests as a consideration in their admission decisions.)

Demonstrated Need—the difference between the cost of attending a college and your expected family contribution
Denial - the decision by an admissions officer or committee to not offer a student admission to a particular institution
Departmental awards are for students entering their program or pursuing a degree in a certain field of study
Early Action - an admission plan or practice which allows a prospective student to apply for admission according to an early deadline (before the regular admission deadline) and receive notice of acceptance, denial, or deferment with no obligation to the university to enroll, if accepted for admission
Early Admission - admission to college prior to completing a traditional four-year high school program
Early Decision - a plan of admission available at some colleges and universities through which a student may apply according to an early deadline and receive notification regarding acceptance, denial or deferment (The student agrees to make a commitment to enroll, if accepted under the Early Decision plan.)
Early Notification/Early Evaluation - an option offered to applicants by a relative handful of selective institutions to give the applicant some idea of their chances for admission (This is not an admission plan, nor is it a concrete offer of admission.)
Enrollment - student matriculation, registration for classes and, when applicable, occupancy of college housing
Expected Family Contribution (EFC) - the amount that you and your family could be expected to pay for one year of college costs, based on the data gathered from the FAFSA and determined by a federal formula applied to that data (This figure usually differs from the actual amount you will be required to pay.)
