College Admissions Terms and Definitions C

 

Campus Diversity - social inclusiveness that reflects variety in ethnic, nationality, socioeconomic, geographic, religion, and/or other group attributes
 

Campus Life - the demographics, academics, activities, social environment, and other features or aspects of the experience of studying and/or living in a college or university community

 

Campus Tour - a service provided by a college admissions office for prospective students during which they are allowed to visit various campus buildings, meet key institutional personnel, and get a first-hand look at campus life

 

Campus Visit - a component of the college search and admissions processes which involves the prospective student spending time on campus to get an overview of life at a particular institution (This visit may be initiated by the student or take place in response to an invitation from the institution.)

 

Career College - “…a postsecondary institution that provides professional and technical, career-specific educational programs… Completion of a career college program can range from doctoral and master’s degrees, to bachelor’s degrees, to associate degrees, to short-term certificates and diplomas. Career colleges are owned and operated by private individuals, private investors and public corporations.…”

Catalogue - a comprehensive publication that provides a detailed overview of an institution, including its mission, programs, costs, admission requirements, faculty and administration, etc.
College - “...an institution of higher learning that offers four-year undergraduate programs that lead to the bachelor's degree in the arts or sciences (B.A. or B.S.). The term "college" is also used in a general sense to refer to a postsecondary institution. A college may also be a part of the organizational structure of a university…”

College Box – is an exclusive email account on My College Options designed to deliver messages from colleges interested in you.

 

College Essay - a brief composition on a single subject that is required by many colleges as a part of the application process for admission

 

College Planning - engagement in a series of processes and activities directed toward the objective of enrolling in college (This may involve self-evaluation, goal setting, the college search, preparing to pay for a college education, applying to college, making decisions about the acceptance of an enrollment offer, and other aspects of actually becoming a first-year, transfer, returning, or graduate college student.)

 

College Application - 1) the act of seeking admission to a particular college or university; 2) the official forms and documents necessary for consideration by college admissions officers during the process of a prospective student’s pursuit of acceptance at a particular college or university

 

The College Board - a not-for-profit membership association that provides a variety of services to college-bound students, to educators, and to parents (The organization is, perhaps, most noted for its administration of the SAT and PSAT examinations. College Board® is the trademark of the organization.)

 

College Counseling - a student service conducted by a trained and/or certified professional to prepare students, as thoroughly as possible, for the transition from high school to postsecondary opportunities and, particularly, for enrollment in a college-level course of studies

 

College Entrance Exams - (There are two dashes here instead of the longer line like the others) standardized tests designed to assess students’ knowledge and predict the pre-college student’s ability to perform in college-level classes (These tests provide colleges and universities with standardized data for use in the college admission process.)

 

College Fair - an event at which colleges, universities, and other organizations related to higher education present themselves in an exposition atmosphere for the purpose of attracting and identifying potential applicants

 

College Major – is a concentrated field of study with specific curriculum objectives leading to a degree in the respective discipline. See Choosing a Major

 

College Planning – the process of preparing academically, mentally, emotionally and financially for your future college education and career path.

 

College Rep Visit - a visit by a college or university admissions representative to a high school or community site for the purpose of recruiting students for admission to the post-secondary institution

 

College Scholarship Service/Financial Aid (CSS) Profile - a service provided by The College Board to provide personalized student information to higher education institutions for use in their awarding scholarships and grants to students eligible to attend those institutions (The CSS Profile may be required in the application process for financial aid at some institutions.)

 

College Search - steps taken in the early phases of college planning in order to identify, locate, and investigate college-level programs that meet individual student interests, abilities, and needs

 

College Selection - the act of choosing and making the decision to enroll in and attend a particular college-level program

 

Corporate Scholarships are awarded to help employees and their families, show community support and to encourage future job seekers toward a career in their area of business. Corporate scholarships are much less competitive than other types of merit scholarships because of geography, employment and the relatively low number of applicants. Start with your family's employers, check out the newspaper and see which companies in your area are awarding scholarships then contact these businesses and find out how to apply.

 

Cost of Attending College- the total cost of tuition, room and board,books, transportation, fees and personal expenses.
